COIA Report
June 2007
In May, 2007 I attended the COIA meeting that was held on the Stanford University campus.
Brief Background
COIA (http://www.neuro.uoregon.edu/~tublitz/COIA/index.html ) is a grassroots effort of D1A Faculty Senates working for intercollegiate athletics reform. There are currently 55 members, including 9/11 from the Big Ten; Purdue and Wisconsin are not currently members.
Meeting
The focus of the meeting was to review a DRAFT version of: Framing the Future: Reforming Intercollegiate Athletics (2007) ; a copy of the report is also attached. A revised version was unanimously approved on June 15, 2007 and was reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education (June 18th, on line). The next step is to begin the process of implementing these proposals at the local, conference, and national levels. This will be led by the respective University Faculty Senates and be done in conjunction with NCAA.
Besides COIA representatives, such as myself, there were representatives from the College Sports Project (Div. III) http://www.collegesportsproject.org/ ; the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association http://org.elon.edu/ncaafara/fara.html ; the Division 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives http://www.oneafar.org/ ; the Knight Commission http://www.knightcommission.org/ ; and the NCAA

Respectfully submitted,
