Committee Charge

a. Charge to the Committee.

  1. The Committee shall be governed by the terms of the General Charter.
  2. In addition, the Committee shall be responsible for:
    1. Selecting speakers for the University Lecture Series with the goal of presenting a balanced slate of speakers who will deal with topics of wide interest. Before making the selection, the Committee shall solicit and consider suggestions from all interested parties;
    2. Advising on and assisting in arrangements for lectures;
    3. Coordinating its activities with other appropriate programming groups on campus;
    4. Ensuring that the Regents Speakers Policy (BRPM 4.2) is adhered to in events under its jurisdiction.
Current Year Meeting DatesEvery Friday from 1:30-2:30 PM at IMU, excluding holidays.

  • Whole committee met every Friday from 1:30-2:30 PM at IMU
  • Co-Chairs and Advisor met once a week
Current Year ActivitiesWe handle the entire process of bringing speakers, from discussing which speakers to bring, to booking/contracts, sponsorships, working with partnerships, logistics, and planning the event itself and other small events throughout the visit.

Current events in the world and in national/state media, existing world challenges, and lecturers from many different spheres in education, such as medicine, civic engagement, etc. 

These topics are not predetermined but chosen by the committee via speakers members are interested in and see that campus/the IC community is interested in.

What should we tell applicants for this committee regarding expectations of members (anticipated workload, existence of subcommittees, etc.)?

Committee Member Expectations:

  • Attendance at weekly in-person meetings: Fridays at 1:30 p.m.
  • Attendance at sub-committee meetings, lecture advisor meetings & others as necessary.
  • Attendance at lecture committee events.
  • Assistance at lecture committee events: ushering, guest relations, book signings, collecting and asking questions from the audience.
  • Serve as host/coordinator for at least one lecture event per year.
  • Assist other committee members with their events.
  • Research potential speakers and present them to the committee.
  • Write letters of invitation to potential speakers.
  • Represent the committee by contacting potential financial partners and sponsors.
  • Gather program proposals via outreach to the university community.
  • Assist with promoting lecture events via social media, emails and class announcements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
